Ayr sits on the Nith River in North Dumfries Township, about eight kilometres southwest of Cambridge, and it has one rule that sets it apart from everywhere else Kitchener Snow & Ice works.
The Township Clears the Sidewalks
North Dumfries contracts sidewalk snow clearing across the township. Residents and property owners are not responsible for shovelling them.
That is genuinely unusual here. Waterloo puts a 24-hour obligation on homeowners with a $100 first-offence fine. Cambridge allows 36 hours and can bill you for the cleanup. Woolwich and Wellesley both place it on the owner. Ayr does not, and homeowners moving in from a neighbouring municipality frequently do not realise the rule has changed in their favour.
What it means practically is that a quote here covers the driveway, the private walkway and the steps, and does not need to include the public sidewalk. Those private surfaces are still the owner’s responsibility and still where somebody falls.
Three Villages That Became One
Ayr was laid out in 1839 from three merged settlements, Mudge’s Mills in the centre, Jedburgh to the east and Nithvale to the west. It was incorporated as a village in 1884 and absorbed into North Dumfries Township in 1973.
The 2021 census counted 5,383 residents in 5.76 square kilometres. Its industrial history runs deep for a place this size, with the John Watson Ayr Agricultural Works founded in 1847 and the largest agricultural works in Canada by 1882.
The Nith and What It Does in a Thaw
The Nith River runs through Ayr, and it responds quickly to rain and snowmelt. The Grand River Conservation Authority issues flood warnings through North Dumfries when levels rise on the Nith at Ayr.
That is mostly a spring concern, but it tells you how water moves here. Properties on the lower grade near the river hold meltwater during a mid-winter thaw, and standing water on a driveway in the afternoon is ice by evening. Those properties benefit more from ice control than from an extra clearing pass.
Township Plowing
North Dumfries maintains roughly 175 kilometres of road under Ontario Minimum Maintenance Standards, and a full plowing round takes about six hours to complete. The township advises residents to expect windrows after those routes run.
