Matching Product to Temperature
Plain rock salt is effective in the mild range and increasingly useless as temperatures drop. Treated products and liquid brines extend that range considerably. Below the point where nothing will melt, the correct response is grit for traction rather than more salt.
Applying salt in deep cold because it feels like doing something is a waste of product and of the surface underneath it.
Anti-Icing Before the Freeze
Treating a surface before a forecast freeze prevents the bond forming between ice and pavement, which takes much less product than breaking that bond afterwards. When the forecast supports it, treating ahead is both cheaper and more effective than reacting.

Why does my driveway ice up even after it has been cleared?
Freeze-thaw. Waterloo Region crosses the freezing point repeatedly through the winter rather than staying cold. Meltwater runs across a cleared surface during the mild part of the day, then refreezes as a thin clear film when temperatures drop after dark. That film is black ice, and it forms on exactly the surfaces you cleared.
Does salt still work when it gets really cold?
Plain rock salt loses effectiveness as temperatures fall and does very little in deep cold. Treated salt products and brines keep working lower. When it is cold enough that no product will melt anything, grit is the honest answer, because it provides traction rather than pretending to melt ice.
Will salt damage my driveway or my plants?
Chloride is hard on concrete, particularly newer concrete, and on the grass and beds where meltwater drains. That is why treatment should be targeted rather than broadcast everywhere. We concentrate on steps, walkways and slopes, and we can use grit near planting beds.
